Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that typically forms when lava cools rapidly without sufficient time for crystal growth.

  1. Color: Obsidian comes in various colors, including black, brown, gray, and green. The most common is black obsidian, which is often referred to simply as "obsidian."

  2. Hardness: Obsidian has a hardness of approximately 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively hard but not as hard as some other minerals like quartz.

  3. Clarity: Obsidian is usually opaque, although it can sometimes exhibit translucent edges in thin pieces or when polished.

  4. Luster: Obsidian typically has a vitreous or glassy luster, giving it a shiny appearance when polished.

  5. Density: The density of obsidian ranges from about 2.2 to 2.4 g/cm³, which is similar to that of common glass.

  6. Metaphysical Properties: Obsidian is believed to have strong protective properties, shielding the wearer or the environment from negative energies, psychic attacks, and harmful influences. It is thought to help ground and stabilize energy, allowing individuals to stay centered and connected to the earth.
