Bloodstone is often found associated with jasper, another variety of chalcedony, which can contribute to its overall composition.

  1. Color: Bloodstone is typically dark green with red or brownish-red spots or flecks. The green color comes from the presence of chlorite minerals, while the red spots are caused by iron oxide or hematite inclusions.

  2. Hardness: Bloodstone has a hardness of around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. This means it is relatively durable and can resist scratching and abrasion. However, it's still advisable to handle bloodstone with care to avoid damage.

  3. Clarity: Bloodstone is generally opaque, meaning it does not allow light to pass through. The presence of inclusions and impurities can further reduce its transparency. Some specimens may have a slightly translucent appearance in thinner sections, but overall, clarity is not a prominent characteristic of bloodstone.

  4. Luster: Bloodstone typically exhibits a vitreous (glassy) luster when polished. The surface can sometimes appear slightly waxy due to the presence of microscopic crystals and minerals.

  5. Density: The density of bloodstone  falls within the range of 2.58 to 2.64 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³). This density is similar to other varieties of chalcedony and quartz.

  6. Metaphysical Properties: Bloodstone is thought to promote emotional balance and stability. It may help alleviate stress, anxiety, and anger, promoting a sense of calmness and inner peace. Some people use bloodstone for emotional healing and to enhance self-esteem and confidence.
